Vice-Admiral Larry Murray was born in Stratford, Ontario on June 6, 1947. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet in 1964. Following graduation from Carleton University in Ottawa and competition of pre-flight training, he joined HMCS Fraser in Halifax in 1968 where he served as Fraser’s navigating officer.
In 1971 he was appointed Executive Officer of HMCS Cowichan before joining the staff of Officer Training Division, Fleet School Esquimalt as navigation instructor. He next served as Navigation and Operations Officer in HMCS Provider and then commanded HMC ships Chaleur and Miramichi. In 1978 he was appointed Combat Officer of HMCS Algonquin at Halifax and attended Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in 1979 before joining HMCS Athabaskan as Executive Officer in 1980.
Vice-Admiral Murray served as Senior Staff Officer Plans in Maritime Command Headquarters prior to assuming command of HMCS Iroquois in 1983 where he took part in the rescue of crew members from the Panamanian freighter Ho Ming.
Vice-Admiral Murray became Deputy Chief of Staff Personnel in 1985 and was appointed commander of First Canadian Destroyer Squadron in 1987. He became Chief of the Defense Staff last July. Vice-Admiral Murray and his wife Suzanna have four children
